IVA DAWN is the alter-ego solo project of singer-songwriter WHITNEY MOWER.
Whitney grew up a Mormon in the desert landscape of Provo, Utah, which has born artists such as Neon Trees, Sego and Fictionist. At 18, she left the church and moved to Texas where she started playing music and writing fiction. After finishing her master’s degree in Creative Writing at the University of Houston, she’s now living in Los Angeles pursuing music full time.
Whitney’s songs feel retrospective in chord progression and melody. Influenced by singers like Roy Orbison, Julie London, and the musicals of Rogers and Hammerstein, her voice is classic and crooning. Her music is also inspired by current artists such as Beach House, Warpaint, Dum Dum Girls, Crystal Stilts, Grizzly Bear, and even Chris Isaak.
Having grown up in Provo, Utah, or what Whitney calls “a sort of present-day 1950s,” you can hear the local girl singing you a catchy line at the Malt Shop, but underneath that happy-go-lucky teenage melody there’s a little darkness, maybe even a little violence, a little more than plain and simple bad romance . . . there’s Iva Dawn.
On her debut EP of original songs, Whitney was joined by longtime bandmate guitarist/bassist LUCAS GORHAM (Grandfather Child) and drummer MATT CHAMBERLAIN, whose credits include studio albums with Birdy, David Bowie, Sarah McLachlan and Brandi Carlile.
Released on February 10th, 2015 by TRIPLE POP, the six (6) song debut EP “The Only One” was produced by GRAMMY award winning producer-engineer, TOM BILLER (Warpaint, Kate Nash). Song titles include The Only One, Peter, Officer, Laugh Until I Cry and Song for C In the Key of C.
In 2018, Iva Dawn released her second EP, True Voodoo. In 2019, she created a new alias They/Live which has proved popular in the synth genre.
